Benefits for Members

CAPAL's mission is to promote, advance and support the profession of academic librarianship for the advancement of research, teaching and learning at accredited post-secondary institutions and to further the professional interests of our members.

Our first organizational meeting was held in January 2013 and we were incorporated formally on June 12, 2013. 

Membership in CAPAL includes e-newsletters, access to the member discussion list CAPAL-L, and the chance to participate in a growing national organization! We have over 300 members, and hold an annual conference at the Congress for the Humanities and Social Sciences. We also publish the Canadian Journal of Academic Librarianship / Revue canadienne de bibliothéconomie universitaire, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.

We are a member-driven organization, and we want to stay in touch with you and know what your interests are.Your membership will continue to build a national association to promote, advance and support the profession of academic librarianship in post-secondary educational institutions in Canada. Your membership will support:

•     The annual conference showcasing the research of academic librarians
•     Our peer-reviewed journal, a forum for research by Canadian academic librarians and for Canadian academic librarianship
•     Opportunities to be involved in communities of professional practice (available at https://capalibrarians.org/communities-of-practice/)
  
•     Opportunities to be involved in building a national organization specific to academic librarianship
•     Opportunities to learn new skills in conference planning, journal publishing, leadership.
•     And much much more -- because as a member-driven association we expect new initiatives! We are committed to exploring new ideas with each other, and responding creatively to change.

Membership Fees
We have kept the fees as low as possible while providing enough funding for the Association to thrive. Our fees range from an average of $60 for those employed as academic librarians, down to $20 for students. Memberships are $25 for those seeking work and retirees.
